Ransomware Decrypters | Where to Find the Antidote

Jordan Kadlec

While no one wants to be hit with ransomware, the fact is that one in two businesses will be infected with some type of ransomware in 2017. Knowing what to do and where to find a possible antidote or decrypter can be a vital part of recovering your encrypted files without paying a ransom.

Known Decrypters

A decrypter is a tool created by cyber security companies which enables victims to recover their encrypted files. While all ransomware variants don’t have a decrypter, it’s extremely important to know where to go to see whether the variant you have been infected with has one. The following companies provide decrypters for you to recover your encrypted files in the event you have been infected with ransomware.

Emsisoft

According to their website, Emsisoft has a vision of a malware-free world which means a place where: home and business computer security is engineered to perfection; innovative anti-malware solutions that are efficient, powerful, unobtrusive and minimalistic; software that effectively detects new threats before your computer is compromised; and products that do their job perfectly.

Emsisoft has an extensive list of decrypters they have created and provide with no cost to the victims. What’s most interesting about Emsisoft decrypters is they provide the number of times each decrypter has been downloaded. Most of the decrypters range from anywhere between 2,000 to 40,000 downloads. Autolocky, a member of the Locky ransomware family, comes in as the top downloaded decrypter with over 110,000 downloads.

Kaspersky

Kaspersky is a well-known cybersecurity company that aims to protect home users, small and medium-sized businesses, and enterprises from cyber-threats and provide them with tools to control and manage their cyber security. Kaspersky has an entity named ‘No Ransom’ which is a place to find the latest decrypters, ransomware removal tools, and information on ransomware protection.

Compared to Emsisoft, ‘No Ransom’ is much smaller and currently has six decrypters for ransomware. What’s unique about ‘No Ransom’ however, are two characteristics of the web page. First, the page can be switched between appearing in English or Russian. Second, ‘No Ransom’ has a FAQ page that aims to educate victims on all things ransomware.

The website has several features including the most updated news stories relating to cybersecurity, tutorials, discussion forums, and decrypter downloads.

In Bleeping Computer’s ‘Ransomware Decrypters Downloads’ page, they currently have decrypters for 13 variants of ransomware. Like its website, the decrypters are completely free for victims who have been infected by ransomware.
